Indonesia picks Borneo as site of new capital. August 27, 2019 -- Indonesia intends to move its capital from the climate-threatened megacity of Jakarta to the sparsely populated island of Borneo, home to some of the world’s greatest tropical rainforests. Indonesia’s current capital, Jakarta, is home to more than 10 million people – and has some of the world’s worst air pollution and traffic congestion. Poor urban planning on swampy land, as well as unregulated draining of aquifers, has left 40% of the city below sea level. Its worst affected areas are sinking by up to 25cm per year. President Joko Widodo says his government plans to build a smart, green city, but some environmentalist groups fear the $33bn relocation plan may put further pressure on rainforest dwelling species like the orangutan. The move is part of a broader strategy to decentralise Indonesia’s economic growth – Jakarta is home to 60% of the country’s population and accounts for over half
